Shop, dine and discover a Great American Main Street. Located one hour from Washington DC, Baltimore, and nearby Gettysburg, Antietam, and Harpers Ferry, Frederick has it all. Maryland is located in an ideal spot for drug traffickers. The state is divided by I-95 and easily reached by several large cities in the Northeast, Midwest and the South. Baltimore Harbor contributes to the problem of drug smuggling into the state. It may be no surprise that Frederick is currently dealing with one of the worst drug problems in the nation. The harbors of Baltimore to the east, and the nations capital to the southeast puts Frederick in perfect position to inherit several forms of drugs being trafficked.
Cocaine and crack abuse have been a huge problem in Maryland for more than 30 years. Crack cocaine is heavily abused, especially along the I-95 corridor that connects Baltimore and Washington right near Frederick. As a result, crime statistics have escalated in Maryland. The growth of drug treatment centers in the Frederick area have become a necessity.
Methamphetamine is not yet a big problem in Frederick. The city has had few raids of methamphetamine laboratories. Law enforcement officials believe, however, that methamphetamine will soon be the most abused drug in Frederick.
Club drugs like GHB, Ketamine and ecstasy are heavily abused in Frederick, mainly by teenagers and college students. As can be expected, marijuana is widely abused in the state and in large supply.
Prescription drug abuse, especially of Oxycontin and similar drugs, is of concern in Frederick. Benzodiazepines, methadone and Xanax are also heavily abused in Frederick. Counterfeit drugs from Mexico have recently come into the state and are finding their way to the city.
